We celebrated the next phase of our Wagerup big battery project on 1 November with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by WA Minister for Energy the Hon Bill Johnston MLA, employees, and project and government partners.
Minister Johnston and our Executive Director of Trade and Portfolio Management, Chris Campbell, turned a sandy sod to mark the next stage for the 100 MW, two-hour battery project that we’re delivering with our project partners by early 2025.
Once complete, the battery will connect to existing high voltage infrastructure at the Wagerup Power Station, providing backup capacity and essential system services for the South West Interconnected System when needed.
Minister Johnston called the project a "critical piece of infrastructure" for the region, saying:
"This is a great story, isn't it? That Alinta and the private sector are investing in these batteries that are going to help us transition the South West Interconnected System to more renewable energy," Minister Johnston said.
