Concessions & Rebates

You may be eligible to receive an energy concession or rebate towards your bill.

The Federal and State governments provide various programs and concession rebates to eligible residential and business customers, helping to reduce energy costs for households and businesses.

Who is eligible for a concession or rebate?

For most concessions and rebates, you will need to be a resident of the relevant state to qualify. You must also be the primary account holder (the account and bill must be in your name). Check the details of each concession and rebate for further eligibility requirements.

How to add a concession to your account

Adding a concession in MyAccount is quick and easy. Follow these steps or watch the tutorial video below.

  1. Log in and select 'Settings' at the top right of your screen.
  2. At the bottom of the page choose 'Add new or change concession'.
  3. Select the account you wish to apply a concession to.
  4. Fill in the concession card details and accept the Privacy Policy and terms.
  5. Review your details and select 'Submit'.

Your concession card details can take up to 24 hours to appear in MyAccount.

Note: Concessions in South Australia cannot be added in MyAccount.

The State Government can help Western Australian customers manage their energy bills in a number of ways. More information on what eligible concessions and rebates are available to you, can be found below.

Types of concessions and rebates by state

The Low Income Household Rebate helps eligible NSW households to pay their electricity bills by providing:

  • $285 a year to eligible customers with an electricity account; or,
  • $313.50 a year to eligible long-term residents of residential communities (caravan and mobile home parks), retirement villages and strata schemes who receive electricity bills from or on behalf of their community operators.

In addition to general qualifications, applicants must hold either a:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Services Australia or the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)
  • Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • Low Income Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • DVA Veteran Gold Card.

Note: Commonwealth Senior Heath Cardholders are not eligible for this rebate.

The Gas Rebate helps eligible NSW households pay their gas bills by providing:

  • $110 each financial year to eligible customers with a natural gas account; or
  • $121 each financial year to eligible customers with on-supplied LPG or natural gas and who live in residential communities, retirement villages and strata schemes; or
  • $121 each financial year to eligible customers who use delivered LPG (bottled gas) for basic household needs such as cooking, heating or hot water.

In addition to general qualifications, an eligible applicant must purchase LPG in cylinders of 45 kilograms or more to use for domestic cooking, heating or hot water at their principal place of residence; and have their name, address and LPG cylinder size purchased or refilled, appear on a tax invoice/receipt issued by their LPG supplier, residential community operator, retirement village operator, or strata management company; and hold either a:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Services Australia or the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)
  • Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • Low Income Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • DVA Veteran Gold Card.

Note: Commonwealth Senior Heath Cardholders are not eligible for this rebate.

The Family Energy Rebate (FER) helps make energy bills more affordable for NSW family households with dependent children. The FER is available to applicants who were eligible for and received the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) from the Department of Human Services (DHS) in the previous financial year.

The Family Energy Rebate provides:

  • $180 a year to eligible customers that do not hold a DHS Concession Card or Health Care Card; or,
  • $20 a year to eligible customers that do hold a DHS Concession Card or Health Care and also qualify for the Low Income Household Rebate of $350 a year

You will need to apply for the rebate directly with the Department of Planning and Environment via the Service NSW online form.

In addition to general qualifications, the applicant must have received the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) during the previous financial year. Please note: your FTB must have been finalised by the DHS before you submit an application for the Family Energy Rebate. To check this, contact the DHS on 136 150.

The Life Support Rebate provides financial help to people who need, or have someone living with them who needs, approved energy-intensive equipment at home. The list of approved Life Support Equipment (extracted from the NSW Social Code for Energy) includes medical equipment that is essential for supporting life, such as home dialysis, ventilators and oxygen concentrators. The value of the rebate depends on the type of equipment being used.

In addition to general qualifications, applicants must submit a valid application form from the Department of Planning, Environment, Resources and Energy. This must be signed by a registered medical practitioner (who is not the applicant) to verify that the use of the approved life support equipment is required at their principal place of residence.

The Medical Energy Rebate is for customers who are unable to self-regulate their body temperature when exposed to extremes (hot or cold) of environmental temperatures. This is associated with certain medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. To be eligible for the Rebate, customers require a separate diagnosis confirming that they are unable to self-regulate their body temperature. The Medical Energy Rebate provides:

  • $200 a year to eligible customers with an electricity account; or,
  • $313.50 a year to eligible residents of on-supplied residential communities, retirement villages and strata schemes

Application for this rebate is via the Service NSW online form.

In addition to general qualifications, applicants must submit a valid application form from the Department of Planning and Environment. This must be signed by a registered medical practitioner (who is not the applicant) to verify that either the customer named on the bill or anyone residing at the residence has an inability to self-regulate body temperature*; and also hold a:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by Services Australia or the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA)
  • Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • Low Income Health Care Card issued by Services Australia
  • DVA Veteran Gold Card.

As well, you or someone living with you: 

  • is not able to self-regulate body temperature
  • is assessed by a registered medical practitioner (GP or specialist) who has been treating you or the person for at least 3 months, and
  • meets at least one Primary Qualifying Condition and at least one Secondary Qualifying Condition.

Note: A medical practitioner cannot provide an assessment if they are also the applicant.

The Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) Scheme helps people experiencing a short term financial crisis or emergency to pay their electricity or gas bill. EAPA vouchers are issued by participating EAPA providers such as St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, Anglicare and many others. The EAPA Scheme operates through a voucher system and each voucher is worth $50. The EAPA provider assesses the customer’s situation and determines each case based on individual circumstances. The vouchers issued to the customer are sent to the retailer electronically by the EAPA provider and the vouchers are paid to the customer’s account.

Queensland pensioners and seniors may be eligible for:

  • The Electricity Rebate - $372.20 (GST inclusive) per year.
  • The Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate - $89.70 per year (GST inclusive).
  • The Electricity Life Support Concession (ELSC) - If you have been provided with an oxygen concentrator by MASS or a kidney dialysis machine by Queensland Health, you may be eligible for a concessional payment of up to $758.04 per year, or $63.17 per month ($189.51 per quarter) for each oxygen concentrator, $507.65 per year, or $42.30 per month ($126.90 per quarter) for each kidney dialysis machine you use. If you have one of these machines but Queensland Health did not supply it, you are not eligible to receive the electricity life support concession.
  • Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession (MCHEC) - helps with electricity costs for people who have a chronic medical condition, such as multiple sclerosis, autonomic system dysfunction, significant burns or a severe inflammatory skin condition, which is aggravated by changes in temperature. It currently provides $372.20 (GST inclusive) per year to eligible applicants (eligibility is reviewed every two years).
  • Home Energy Emergency Assistance (HEEA) - for Queensland households experiencing problems paying their electricity or reticulated natural gas bills as a result of an unforeseen emergency or a short-term financial crisis. HEEA is one-off emergency assistance to help with paying your home energy bills pays up to $720 once every 2 years. 

All rebates include GST. Rebates for eligible card holders may appear as GST exclusive on bills.

  • Queensland Seniors Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card (and receive the War Widow/er Pension or special rate TPI Pension)
  • Centrelink Health Care Card (Electricity Rebate only)
  • Asylum seeker status (residents will need to provide their ImmiCard details) (Electricity Rebate only)

ConcessionsSA within the Department of Human Services provides an energy concession of up to $281.78 (GST exclusive) per year towards household energy accounts (starting 1 July 2025). Available to eligible South Australian residents on low or fixed incomes, for their principal place of residence.

You could be eligible if you:

  • hold an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment
  • have an energy account in your name and are listed first on your energy bill
  • live at the property

Transferring your concession details to Alinta Energy only takes a phone call. Just follow these steps:

  1. Wait to receive your first electricity account from Alinta Energy. You will need to know your electricity reference number and the period that the first account covers.
  2. Call 1800 307 758 to provide those details to the ConcessionsSA Hotline.

You can also email these details to concessions@sa.gov.au or use the online update details form.

ConcessionsSA will check for any concession missed during the transition and, if you were eligible for that period, will arrange for it to be backdated onto your next bill.

This is an emergency payment that can help you pay for an electricity debt if you are in financial hardship and have been or are at risk of being disconnected.

You can apply once every two years, through a financial counsellor.

Call the National Dept Helpline on 1800 007 007 or visit Emergency help with finances on the South Australian government website to find a financial counsellor.

Asylum seekers who live in South Australia and meet visa criteria can access concessions for energy and water bills, transport, and more.

This concession helps pay for extra energy costs related to medically required heating and cooling.

It is available in addition to the energy concession, for eligible South Australians on a fixed or low income, who use heating or cooling at home to prevent the worsening of a qualifying medical condition.

Eligible people get this concession direct to their bank accounts.

Parents or legal guardians of a child with a qualifying condition can also apply.

ConcessionsSA provides a range of concessions and programs that can help you pay for the cost of living, or for specific costs like glasses and funerals. These include:

Domestic mains electricity usage and service costs. The concession is available year-round.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who has one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

17.5 per cent of electricity usage and service costs.

The concession is calculated after retailer discounts and solar credits have been deducted.

The concession does not apply to the first $171.60 of the annual bill. This is calculated as a daily rate on each bill.

Households with very high electricity bills (over $2,890.45 in the year, starting 1 December 2018) need to apply for the Excess electricity concession to continue to receive a concession on their bill.

How do I apply for the concession?

Call Alinta Energy on 13 37 02 and give your concession card details over the phone.

We will check your concession card details with Centrelink and apply the concession to your bill if proven eligible.

What does this concession apply to?

Domestic mains electricity usage and service costs above $2,890.45 for the annual period starting 1 December 2018. This amount is reviewed each year.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder whose annual electricity costs are above $2,890.45 and who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

17.5 per cent of electricity usage and service costs.

The concession is calculated after retailer discounts and solar credits have been deducted.

How do I apply for the concession?

Alinta Energy will check if you need to apply for the Excess electricity concession and send you an application form.

You must sign a declaration confirming that the electricity used at your address is for domestic purposes, that no commercial business is being conducted at the address, and that the electricity is not being used for an illegal purpose.

After you have signed and dated the form, send it to the department at the address listed on the form.

DFFH (formerly DHHS) will check your eligibility and advise Alinta Energy.  We will calculate the Excess electricity concession and apply the concession to your next bill.

My bills are high due to medical needs – do I need to apply?

If you receive the Life support concession or the Medical cooling concession you do not need to complete an application form to receive the Excess electricity concession. Alinta Energy will apply the concession to your account provided you have submitted the necessary documentation for Life Support and Medical Cooling concessions.

Discounts on gas bills are available for eligible concession card holders to help ease the cost of living during the winter months.

What does this concession apply to?

Domestic mains gas usage and service costs. The concession is available over the winter period of 1 May to 31 October each year.

Who can apply for the concession?

A gas account holder who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

17.5 per cent of gas usage and service costs.

The concession is calculated after retailer discounts are deducted.

The concession does not apply to the first $62.40 of the six-month winter period bills. This is calculated as a daily rate on each bill.

Households with very high bills (over $1,587.82 in the period from 1 May to 31 October 2018) will need to apply for the Excess gas concession to continue to receive a concession on their bill.

How do I apply for the concession?

We will check your concession card details with Centrelink and apply the concession to your bill if proven eligible.

Was your winter gas bill more than you expected? You may be able to claim a concession if you have a relevant concession card.

What does this concession apply to?

Domestic mains gas usage and service costs above $1,587.82 for the six-month winter period 1 May to 31 October 2019.

Who can apply for the concession?

A gas account holder whose winter gas costs are above $1,587.82 and who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

17.5 per cent of gas usage and service costs.

The concession is calculated after retailer discounts are deducted.

How do I apply for the concession?

Alinta Energy will check if you need to apply for the Excess gas concession and send you an application form.

What does this concession apply to?

Mains domestic electricity accounts.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who:

  • Holds an eligible concession card (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card) and
  • Uses an eligible life support machine or
  • Has a household member who uses an eligible life support machine.
What machines are eligible for the concession?

Approved machines are those that use at least 1,880 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. Machines already approved are:

  • Intermittent peritoneal dialysis machines (electricity)
  • Oxygen concentrators (electricity)
  • Haemodialysis machines (electricity).

Applications for other machines must be approved by the department (DFFH).

Most continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) machines do not meet the 1,880 kilowatt hour threshold.

How much is the concession?

The electricity discount is the cost of 1,880 kilowatt hours (470 kilowatt hours per quarter) of electricity each year, calculated using the general domestic tariff of your retailer.

How do I apply for the concession?

The application form needs to be completed and signed by your doctor, nurse or hospital social worker confirming your use of a life support machine. Once completed, email us at customer.service@alintaenergy.com.au or contact us 13 37 02.

Alinta Energy will check your concession card details with Centrelink and apply the concession to your bill if proven eligible.

To receive a concession on electricity bills related to medically required cooling, your medical condition must be confirmed by your doctor.

What does this concession apply to?

Mains domestic electricity usage and service costs between 1 November and 30 April.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who holds an eligible concession card (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Veterans' Affairs Gold Card) and:

  • Has a medical condition that affects their body's ability to self-regulate temperature or
  • Has a household member with such a medical condition.
What medical conditions are eligible for the concession?

Pre-approved conditions are:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Lymphoedema
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-polio Syndrome/Poliomyelitis
  • Motor Neurone Disease.

Applications for other conditions must be approved by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH).

How much is the concession?

17.5 per cent of electricity usage and service costs between 1 November and 30 April.

During this period the Medical cooling concession is given in addition to the Annual electricity concession.

How do I apply for the concession?

For an application form phone:

  • Call Alinta Energy on 13 37 02
  • The Concessions information line 1800 658 521 (toll free).

The application form needs to be completed and signed by your doctor confirming your medical condition. If your condition is one of the pre-approved conditions, send the form and email us at customer.service@alintaenergy.com.au or contact us on 13 37 02.

For any other condition, send your form to Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) for assessment.

Alinta Energy will check your concession card details with Centrelink and apply the concession to your bill if proven eligible.

From 1 December 2023, the Service to Property Charge Concession will no longer be offered on electricity bills by the Victorian Government.

A range of other concessions and benefits are available to help with utility bills.

If your electricity usage bill is lower than the service charge, concession card holders can have the service charge reduced to the usage cost.

What does this concession apply to?

The service charge on mains domestic electricity bills with very low electricity use.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

If the electricity use on a bill is lower than the service charge, the service charge is reduced to the cost of the electricity used.

The concession is based on your usage cost before any solar credits are deducted.

How do I apply for the concession?

Alinta Energy will automatically give you the concession if you are eligible and you have provided your concession details.

From 1 December 2023, the Controlled Load Electricity Concession will no longer be offered on electricity bills by the Victorian Government.

A range of other concessions and benefits are available to help with utility bills.

Eligible concession card holders can receive a 13 per cent discount off their controlled load electricity bills.

What does this concession apply to?

Controlled load usage charges on domestic mains electricity.

Controlled load charges apply to separately metered electric hot water or slab heating, which is measured via a dual element electricity meter or dual element smart meter. These tariffs are usually shown as 'controlled load' or 'dedicated circuit' tariffs.

The concession is only available to households with an eligible dual element electricity meter or dual element smart meter.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

13 per cent of controlled load electricity costs.

How do I apply for the concession?

Alinta Energy will automatically give you the concession if you are eligible and you have provided your concession details.

From 1 December 2023, the Electricity Transfer Fee Waiver will no longer be offered on electricity bills by the Victorian Government.

Concession card holders can have their electricity service connected for free when moving into a new house.

What does this concession apply to?

The transfer fee (re-energization fee) that is charged by Alinta Energy when account holders move house.

Who can apply for the concession?

An electricity account holder who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.
How much is the concession?

The full transfer fee is waived.

How do I apply for the concession?

Alinta Energy will automatically give you the concession if you are eligible and you have provided your concession details.

Victorian Energy Compare is the Victorian Government's free, independent energy price comparison tool. It uses information you provide about your household and from your electricity or gas bills to help find the best energy offers for you.

$250 Power Saving Bonus

Victorians from low-income households can now access a one-off $250 payment to help with their energy bills, thanks to the Victorian Government’s new Power Saving Bonus.

To be eligible to claim the Power Saving Bonus, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a Victorian residential energy consumer (that is, have a residential electricity account)
  • You must receive one of the following concession benefits:
    • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
    • JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy
    • Department of Veterans Affairs Pensioner Concession Card
    • Department of Veterans Affairs Gold Card.

Please note: Holders of Health Care Cards who are not recipients of Youth allowance, JobSeeker, Austudy or Abstudy are not eligible.

Concession card holders who source non-mains energy for their heating, cooking and hot water can apply for a concession to help cover their yearly energy costs.

What does this concession apply to?

Non-mains sources of energy:

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • Firewood for domestic heating, cooking or hot water
  • Heating oil
  • Electricity accessed via an embedded network
  • Generator fuel.
Who can apply for the concession?

An account holder who holds one of the following eligible cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Gold Card
Are there other requirements for the concession?

Special conditions apply for firewood and generator fuel concessions. See the application form for more details.

How much is the concession?

The concession is paid annually based on the amount paid for each energy type in that year.

The rebate amounts for the 2020 calendar year are:

  • $51 for spending from $100 to $295.99
  • $156 for spending from $296 to $889.99
  • $259 for spending from $890 to $1479.99
  • $370 for spending from $1480 to $2112.99
  • $473 for spending from $2113 to $2702.99
  • $575 for spending $2703 and above.

A separate rebate is paid for each energy type used.

How do I apply for the concession?

Application forms are available by phoning the Concessions information line on 1800 658 521 (toll free), and may also be available from LPG suppliers, local councils and caravan park proprietors.

Applications for each year close on 31 December of the following year.

Applications must include copies of paid invoices or receipts.

The department will check your concession card details with Centrelink and provide the concession as a rebate.

Relief grants for paying overdue energy or water bills are available to low-income Victorians experiencing unexpected hardship.

What is the grant?

The grant provides help to pay a mains electricity, gas or water bill that is overdue due to a temporary financial crisis.

Who can apply for the grant?

An account holder who has one of the following eligible concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.

If you don’t have one of these cards but are part of a low-income household, you may also be able to apply. Alinta Energy will ask you some questions to check if you are eligible before issuing a form.

The grant is available to renters and homeowners.

What are the criteria for the grant?

You can only apply for a grant on an active account.

You must show that you have no way of paying the account without assistance, and

You must meet one of the following criteria:

  • You or someone in your house has experienced family violence.
  • You have had a recent decrease in income, for example, lost your job
  • You have had high unexpected costs for essential items
  • The cost of shelter is more than 30% of your household income.  
How much is the grant?

The amount of the grant is based on the amount you owe at the time of application. It is also based on the reasons you have given for applying in your application form.

You can receive a maximum of $650 on each utility type in a two-year period (or $1,300 for households with a single source of energy (for example, electricity only).

You can apply for separate grants for each utility (electricity, gas and water).

How do I apply for the grant?

Contact Alinta Energy on 13 37 02 to request an application. 

We will ask you some preliminary questions before starting your application. 

The application can be completed online, or we can post you a paper form to complete. A friend, support worker or financial counsellor can help you complete the application.

You may be eligible for a state government-funded energy concession or rebate if you hold a government concession card such as a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran Affairs Card.

These energy concessions and rebates are administered by Synergy via your electricity account. For more information, visit the Synergy website www.synergy.net.au.

If you are experiencing difficulties paying your gas bill, you may be eligible for the Hardship Utility Grant Scheme (HUGS).
