Being Honest
About where Australia’s
energy comes from.
At Alinta Energy, we know that diversity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential to driving innovation and progress. That’s why we’re committed to supporting and empowering women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine). Recently, three of our employees attended the Women in STEMM Summit, where they connected with three students from the University of Melbourne to discuss careers, challenges, and the future of women in STEMM.
We paired our employees with students who are on the path to becoming STEMM leaders. Jayanie Bogahawatte, Ravisha Rupasinghe, and Gabrielle Burns are tackling complex research projects, from AI-driven medical modelling to sustainable engineering. But their passion for STEMM isn’t just about technical expertise—it’s about making a real impact.
Jayanie, a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering, was drawn to AI and machine learning early in her academic journey. For her, events like this summit are crucial for building a personal brand and forging connections in the industry.
Ravisha, also studying Mechanical Engineering, is passionate about Explainable AI. She emphasised that representation in leadership is critical—not just for diversity’s sake, but for addressing biases in AI and shaping ethical, inclusive technology.
Gabrielle, a researcher in Infrastructure Engineering, hopes to see a future where women in STEMM are no longer seen as a minority. Growing up in regional Victoria, she had few STEMM role models, which is why she’s determined to be one for the next generation.
Our representatives—Jaya Mukherjee (Quality Practice Manager, Technology), Louise Murphy (Senior Asset Engineer, Merchant Energy), and Elaine Trantor (Lead Structural Engineer, Merchant Energy, Offshore Wind)—left the event feeling inspired and ready to drive change within their own careers and in our workplace.
Jaya walked away with a reinforced belief in the power of diversity, allyship, and continuous learning. One of her biggest takeaways? The difference between mentorship and sponsorship—and why both are crucial for career growth. “Power shouldn’t be about control; it should be about sharing knowledge and lifting others up,” she shared.
For Louise, authenticity and amplifying underrepresented voices were key themes. She was particularly inspired by speakers who shared non-linear career journeys, proving that success doesn’t always follow a straight path. “Your voice matters. Speak up, tell your story, and advocate for what you want.”
Attending the Women in STEMM Summit wasn’t just about networking—it was about learning, growing, and shaping the future. At Alinta Energy, we’re proud to foster an environment where women in STEMM can thrive. Whether through mentorship, career opportunities, or initiatives like this, we’re committed to creating pathways for women to excel.
If you’re looking for a workplace where diversity is celebrated, leadership is inclusive, and innovation is a team effort, we’d love to hear from you. Because the future of STEMM is diverse, inclusive, and driven by talent from all backgrounds—and we’re excited to be part of it.
