Figure out your solar usage

It's easy to see how much solar energy you're exporting and how much electricity you're using from the grid with MyAccount or the Alinta Energy app. Here's how:

  1. Log in to MyAccount or the Alinta Energy app.
  2. Go to the 'Usage' tab at the top.
  3. Choose to view your usage by day or month.

What you'll see

From Grid: Electricity you purchased from the grid (in dollars & kWh).

Solar Feed-in: Solar energy you exported to the grid, and earned credit for (in dollars & kWh).

Yellow bars: Solar energy you exported back to the grid.
Orange bars: Electricity you purchased from the grid.

What's next

Compare the kWh values for 'From Grid' and 'Solar Feed-in' to see if you're using more grid energy or exporting more solar energy. Now use our guide below to find the best plan.

Finding the right solar plan for you

Choosing the best solar plan for you depends on how much solar energy you feed-in (export) vs. what you use from the grid.

Export Solar

Export more than you use from the grid?

A plan with a higher feed-in tariff (FiT) is more important for your home or business.

A higher feed-in tariff may not be as important for your home or business.

Solar FAQs

We've got answers

When your solar system makes more electricity than you use, the extra power goes back into the grid. Your electricity provider pays you for this, and the payment rate is called the feed-in tariff (FiT), measured in cents per kWh.

To save the most, use a solar system big enough to power your home and appliances during daylight hours. This will reduce your electricity bills and help you get the most out of your solar system.

Feed-in credits should appear on your first bill. If they're missing, your smart meter might not be set up for solar yet. If you're an Alinta Energy customer, call us at 1300 669 950.

To check your savings, compare a recent bill to one from before you had solar, making sure they cover similar periods. Keep in mind, the feed-in credit is usually a smaller part of your overall savings.

The standard feed-in tariff you've received hasn't changed since November 2021. With more households installing solar, the value of solar energy fed into the grid has decreased. That's why your new FiT is lower.

From 3 February 2025, your standard feed-in tariff will be:

NSW – 5c/kWh
QLD - 4c/kWh
SA - 4c/kWh

You'll see the updated rate on your next bill after this date.

Yes! All our energy plans are solar compatible. Plus we now have the Solar Balance Electricity plan for residential customers, which offers a higher FiT for the first 10KWh of electricity sent to the grid each day.

Our Solar terms and conditions have been updated to include the following changes:

  • a qualifying solar system can now have a capacity of up to 10kW or larger at our discretion;
  • we've removed reference to government tariffs that aren't currently available;
  • we've added an obligation on renters to check with their landlord before signing up to our solar products;
  • we've made it clear that customers can request their credit balance be refunded when they leave us; and
  • clarified that we may adjust the FiT in accordance with applicable laws.

Ending of the Victorian solar premium feed-in tariff scheme

The PFiT scheme was legislated by the Victorian Government in 2009 to provide customers who had solar panels, with a guaranteed feed-in tariff for 15 years. The scheme is coming to an end on 1 November 2024.

Once it ends, energy retailers such as Alinta Energy are no longer required to provide PFiT credits.

For more information on this, visit the Victorian Government webpage.

From 2 November 2024, your solar feed-in tariff rate will be decreasing in line with the minimum feed-in tariff, as set by the Essential Services Commission.

The minimum feed-in tariff rate set by the Essential Services Commission for 2024-25 is 3.3 cents per kilowatt hour. This means that your applicable feed-in tariff will decrease from 60 cents to 3.3 cents per kilowatt hour.

The next bill you receive after 2 November will include the new solar feed-in tariff.
